Though some results from Saturday’s National Assembly elections are yet to be released, winners have emerged in many Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies. There were a couple of surprises across the country as the carpet was pulled off the feet of candidates of the ruling party in many areas.
For instance, in Oyo State, Senator Kamorudeen Adedibu, son of the late Strongman of Ibadan politics lost his senate seat to Femi Lanlehin of the ACN. The ACN also won the Oyo Central Senatorial seat which incidentally has Ogbomoso, the incumbent Governor’s hometown as part of the district. Many have taken that as an indication that Otunba Alao-Akala might not be able to deliver his constituency at the end of the day.
The PDP however retained Oyo North Senatorial District which is touted to be a PDP stronghold. Accord Party too proved a point as they won four of the federal legislative seats in Oyo State. In Osun State, with Senator Iyiola Omisore’s records, no one would have thought he could be beaten.
Many still remember how Omisore won his first Senate seat from prison custody. But on Saturday, he was beaten flat by Babajide Omoworare of the A.C.N. The same fate befell the former Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola who was beaten by Professor Adeyeye. The A.C.N also dealt severe blows to the PDP in Ogun State where the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo failed to deliver the polling unit in front of his house to the PDP. His daughter, Iyabo too lost her senate seat and it was not a different story for Dimeji Bankole, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Governor Bukola Saraki however proved that he has become the new Godfather in Kwara politics as PDP clinched the Senate seats across the state with Saraki on his way to the Senate. Street Journal also gathered that there was wild jubilation in Oturkpo as the Senate President; David Mark was returned for the fourth time. In Gombe State, Governor Danjuma Goje too won himself a senate seat. In Lagos, the Action Congress of Nigeria had a clean sweep.
